Palmyra Cricket Ground
We are supporting a number of sports especially cricket in the surrounding areas.
We have a cricket ground which was established in 1997 with support from DIK/OIK
(German & Austrian Children’s Fund) with the aim to provide a competitive
infrastructure for advanced sports development for young people at a local,
state and national level.
In 1997 the ground was a bare patch of land and just a fraction of its present size, surrounded by ravines and thorny bushes. It was only through considerable efforts on many levels by all concerned that the Palmyra Cricket Ground (PCG) has reached the international standard which it represents today.
The heart of the ground are four adjacent turf pitches which are of high standard and which are being prepared for matches according to specific needs and the respective competitions.
Mr.Parthasarathy, Chief Curator, Chepauk Cricket Ground at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai has visited the ground more than once and he and his colleagues have provided valuable advice in preparation and maintenance of the pitches. The maintenance crew of the PCG visits Chepauk regularly and participates with the ground staff in preparing their ground/pitches for international one dayers and test matches.
The Palmyra Cricket Club was first registered in 1997 with the Villupuram Cricket Association and topped the II Division in its first year. In the second year Palmyra was runner up and at 28-3-1999 scored a total of 540 runs in 48 overs against the Golden Jubilee Cricket Club from Villupuram in a official Villupuram Cricket Association League Match.
In 2000 the Palmyra Cricket Club joined the Pondicherry Cricket Association (affiliated to Tamil Nadu Cricket Association) because of its close proximity to Pondicherry and also because of the close association of other Auroville sports clubs with Pondicherry. Palmyra Cricket Club joined first in the III Division then played in the II and is now amongst the three leading teams of the Pondicherry I Division.
